Ronald DeFeo Jr. was the son of Lillian and Ronald DeFeo. He was born in Bay Shore, New York on November 1, 1941. On August 9, 1939, his parents were married and divorced in 1948. Ronald Jr. grew up in Bellmore, New York with his two siblings: sister Jeanette and brother Robert. By all accounts, they were a close-knit family who often spent time together as a family. They also had other relatives nearby who frequently visited them as well as their grandmother who lived with them until she died in 1976. Before Nancy Burkhartter, Ronald DeFeo Jr. was married to his high school sweetheart Sharon Salsedo. The couple dated for two years before getting married at Saint Patrick Church in Valley Stream, New York in 1966. After their wedding, they had three children: daughter Lauren (b. 1967), son Michael (b. 1971), and son Richard (b. 1974). DeFeo and Salsedo would eventually divorce in 1979. DeFeo’s first job out of college was with the New York City Department of Finance where he worked as a revenue agent. He then joined a small accounting firm in Plainview, New York where he worked for about two years. Nancy Burkhartter was the daughter of Richard Burkhartter and Dorothy Burkhartter (née Hickey). She was born on March 21, 1949, and raised in Rockville Centre, Long Island. As an infant, she was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder that required her to get multiple blood transfusions. Nancy was an above-average student and was an accomplished athlete who excelled in softball and swimming. She was also a popular student at high school who often volunteered to help out at the local community center and hospital. In 1965, Nancy’s parents divorced and Dorothy moved to Texas. In 1967, Nancy moved with her mother to Texas where they lived until they divorced in 1975. Nancy and her mother then moved back to Long Island and lived in Garden City, New York. In 1973, Nancy married Ronald DeFeo. DeFeo was a car mechanic for General Motors at the time and Nancy’s father helped them get married at the Kaufman County Courthouse in Texas on December 26, 1973. The couple had been dating for 28 months and were high school sweethearts. They would eventually have three children together: a son, Ronald (b. 1974); a daughter, Elizabeth (b. 1977); and a son, Robert (b. 1981). On December 19, 1976, Nancy and Ronald were hosting an affair at their home when Ronald murdered Nancy with a rifle. Her body was discovered the next day in the woods near their home.
